Grammy’s House Receives $20k Grant from the Mary Kay Foundation

Artesia, NM (October 3, 2013) – In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, The Mary Kay FoundationSM has awarded $3 million in grants to 150 domestic violence shelters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Grammy’s House, Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc.  in Artesia, NM received one of the $20,000 unrestricted grants to maintain critical services and programs for individuals who are survivors of domestic abuse.

For nearly 20 years The Mary Kay FoundationSM has supported the prevention and elimination of domestic violence, an epidemic that touches one in every four women in her lifetime. Through the Foundation’s annual shelter grant program, $34 million has been granted to domestic violence organizations since 2000.

“The Mary Kay FoundationSM is proud to support local shelters, like Grammy’s House,  that are on the front lines of helping the thousands of women and children who seek shelter and support from abuse,” said Anne Crews, Vice President of Government Relations for Mary Kay Inc. and board member for The Mary Kay FoundationSM. “The shelter grants are a signature program for The Mary Kay Foundation and represent just one of the ways we are committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence.”

“Our staff, volunteers and clients are so excited and appreciative of the Mary Kay Foundation”, said Celina Bryant, Executive Director   “Our agency has provided a safe haven for women who have fled abusive relationships for the past 20 years, and this grant will go a long way in helping us serve the growing needs of Artesia, Eddy County and surrounding counties”.   Mrs. Bryant explained that Grammy’s is a nineteen bed, full-service facility capable of housing women and children for up to 90 days annually.  The agency is currently fundraising to enlarge the shelter  “The Mary Kay grant is a blessing that will certainly help ensure that Grammy’s will be able to start our remodeling and upgrading project in a timely manner”, reported Mrs. Bryant.

Grammy’s House (GH) Artesia Domestic Violence (DV) Shelter Inc., is a grassroots non-profit formed in 1993 by a group of concerned citizens. Grammy’s House is a DV agency with sole purpose of providing a safe place to heal for adult victims and their children. Grammy’s House also provides intervention services to offenders in the dedicated efforts to end the cycle of violence by instilling responsibility and consequences for their actions. Grammy’s House is the only agency that provides 24 hour shelter services in Artesia, NM and southern Eddy County.

Grammy’s House  provides a wide range of culturally competent DV services which include 24 hour domestic violence emergency shelter services, children’s support group,  skills & knowledge, parenting classes, advocacy & support, DV counseling (all populations), legal advocacy and attorney aid, crisis intervention,  and a wide array of resources and referrals. In addition, Grammy’s House has a 52 week court-ordered program for male and female offenders.
