NEW MEXICO COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HONORED WITH MILAGRO AWARD FOR ANIMAL CARE PROJECT
New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NMCADV) Executive Director Pamela Wiseman will be honored with a Milagro Award on Saturday, October 3rd, 2015. The Milagro Awards are presented every four years by Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM) to raise awareness about animal welfare and honor champions for animals in the state. The Milagro Awards ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Tamaya Resort and Spa.
Ms. Wiseman will receive the Executive Director’s Award for outstanding support of APNM’s mission and program. According to her nominator, “Pam Wiseman has been an outspoken advocate for victims of domestic violence, both human and non-human for over 20 years. Her understanding of the bond between human caregivers and their companion animals prompted her to reach out to Animal Protection of New Mexico and initiate a vital partnership between the two organizations that has led to state funding support for the Companion Animal Rescue Effort.”
The Companion Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) offers relief and support to domestic violence victims and survivors and their companion animals by providing temporary, confidential housing and care for their companion animals through a network of animal shelters and safe havens around the state.
APNM initiated the CARE program in response to statistics like these from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence that up to 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters report that an abuser has threatened, injured or killed the family pet and up to 40% of domestic violence victims refuse to leave their abuser because they are concerned for the welfare of their pets if they are forced to leave them behind. The CARE program has provided a critical resource for victims trying to leave abusive situations, but who fear for the safety of their animals. For more information visit: APNM.org/CARE
This announcement comes as the NMCADV is set to celebrate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Throughout the month of October, domestic violence programs across the state and nation will hold special events and silent vigils to honor victims and survivors and raise awareness about domestic violence. Advocates and community members are encouraged to wear purple ribbons to show their support of domestic violence awareness.
