SlutWalk Albuquerque 2013

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico and the UNM Women’s Resource Center, are proud to present to the community of Albuquerque, SlutWalk ABQ.What is a SlutWalk?
The first SlutWalk started in early 2011, after a reaction to a Canadian police officer’s comment that women should “avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Participating cities have included Seattle, Baltimore, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. Let’s add Albuquerque to that list! We know that no one, regardless of what they are wearing deserves to be raped. If victims are blamed for rape, we give power to the perpetrator. This movement assists communities in confronting social norms that perpetuate sexual violence. We are asking community members to join us in our efforts to raise awareness surrounding the overwhelming effects of victim blaming and slut shaming.

The SlutWalk will take place at the UNM Pit north lot (University at Avenida Cesar Chavez) Saturday, April 13th from 9 am to 1 pm. The march will begin promptly at 9 am, with a community fair from 10:30-1 pm. March participants are encouraged to arrive before 9 am and bring comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen, banners, and signs.

The community fair will include exhibitors, music, speakers, activities, and much more!

We need volunteers to help in the following areas:

  • Marketing this event to the community
  • Event Set up/Tear down

  • Crowd control during march
